"For years she was the confidante of Prince Charles, who would make ‘comfort stops’ at her Wiltshire home on his way back to Highgrove.
And now, 13 years after her death from cancer, the influence of Australian-born Lady Tryon — whom Charles nicknamed Kanga — remains significant, thanks to the roaring trade in royal memorabilia.
Last week, an avid female collector from New Malden, Surrey, paid £1,080 for a card originally received by Lord and Lady Tryon from the Prince and Princess of Wales.
It is signed, ‘And much love from Charles and Diana’ and is dated 1991
Two other cards, posted in 1983 and 1991 and addressed to Anthony Tryon’s elder son Charles, 34, who is the Prince’s godson and a former Page of Honour to the Queen, are also on sale for £850 and £1,150 respectively.
A third sent in 1990 and addressed, ‘To You Both’ and, again, signed by Charles and Diana is for sale at £1,150.
The seller describes the cards as coming ‘from what we consider to be the most important collection that we have ever acquired.’
The blurb continues: ‘Christmas cards that have been hand-signed by both Prince Charles and Princess Diana are quite rare, even rarer still though, is this card, sent to a famous aristocratic
family who were personal friends of both Charles and Diana.’
Of the card to Charles Tryon, the blurb reads: ‘This card was sent to the son, who was the godson of Prince Charles. None of these cards have ever been offered before. This combination makes this one of the rarest cards ever to be offered for sale.’
According to Ed, whose mother was once described by Prince Charles as ‘the only woman who ever understood me’, suspicion has fallen on a former family retainer.
‘I would be very disappointed if this person had sold our family cards.’
Quite how the card came to be on sale after so many years is, I gather, upsetting for Lord Tryon.
His younger son Ed, 31, tells me the family is very concerned to learn their old Christmas cards are being sold on internet auction site eBay. Says Ed: ‘We are horrified by this.

We are not in the habit of keeping old Christmas cards.
But if we did, we would certainly not be selling them. I think it’s appalling.’ "

Documenting Dale

Next Tuesday night 1st December,

Australian national ABCTV

will broadcast a documentary description of

the life of Dale, Lady Tryon,

the former Dale Harper of Melbourne.
Prior to 1997, Australian publications covered her story occasionally,

first because she was a local gel married-well into the English ariscockracy, but later because of it all going so very terribly wrong (right after Lady Diana Spencer died).

Prior to the engagement to Lady Diana, Dale was rumoured to be Very Close to the heir to the throne, concurrently as Mrs Parker-Bowles was also.

There were many many published photos, biographies and reports of the three and older posts here have the links.

The documentary makers (there were two separate production companies involved over the course of it, and they ) both found this blog and emailed me to see if I could add any Melbourne facts.

The blog's posts are mainly unadorned collections of press on the story, since I was wary of libel/slander/defamation/treason etc.

Am imaginative person might concoct from the published facts,

a shocking tale of a prince about to marry a woman he should have done in 1973, and his fear of ruining this joy caused princely demands for his love-letters to be returned, and the feisty Aussie gel's refusal.

This shocking tale's second-act would be the prince's lifelong friend requested to get Very Heavy indeed with this stubborn wife.

He might have drugged her and flung her from the window of a blue-ribbon 5-star baronial health-care facility, which would have had better security one would think..

Lord Friend might then have retreated to the Scottish Highlands and got into more trouble there too.

The documentary might imply a similar story, in the meantime do please read the older posts here and the links to all the 1997 press on a woman led to believe she was next in line.

Here's a taste:

Friends said that she was fantasising when she claimed that someone was trying to kill her, though few would say that she presented a threat to herself or anyone else and the decision to have her arrested remains inexplicable.

As the London Daily Mail published June 2008 then said: - an act which, to this day, seems incomprehensibly and unnecessarily cruel."

Lady 'Kanga' Tryon is detained under Mental Health Act

Lady Tryon, a close friend of the Prince of Wales, was detained by police under the Mental Health Act last night.
Police had received a 999 call expressing concern at her behaviour and about allegations that she had been making.
She was detained yesterday afternoon shortly after leaving the Black Horse Inn in Great Durnfford, Wilts, where she had had lunch with her friend Sarah Miles, the actress.
John Clancy, the pub landlord, who has known her for 25 years, said she seemed very upset.
"Kanga came in here to chat in the pub garden, in her wheelchair, she just needed someone to talk to," he said.
He said she had had nothing to drink and left the pub shortly after 2pm.
Police were called to a house in the village around 2.20pm.
In an official statement, Insp Geoff Hicks of Wiltshire police said:
"Upon arrival, the police spoke to the lady and she was making spurious allegations.
The allegations that she was making were that she felt her life was in danger from someone else.
"As a result of these spurious allegations, the police officers formed the impression that the lady could be detained under the Mental Health Act.
She was then detained by the police officers and brought to Salisbury police station, which is "a place of safety under the Act."
At the police station psychiatrists began an examination to assess whether she should be admitted to a hospital.
Lord Tryon, her husband of 24 years, was informed of her detention immediately and drove from the family home at Great Durnford to be with her.
Lady Tryon's detention followed claims made by her in a telephone conversation with a local news agency that her husband had returned from a fishing trip in Russia and told her he wanted a divorce.
She told the agency that she was shocked and distraught and then put the telephone down.
Her claims about a divorce followed weekend newspaper stories in which she spoke of the deterioration of her marriage.
She had expressed disappointment that while the Prince of Wales had sent flowers, Lord Tryon had not, she claimed, been to visit her during three days of tests in the Royal Marsden Hospital last week, when she was told there had been no recurrence of her cancer.

"Lord Tryon announced yesterday that he planned to divorce his wife, who has suffered a nervous breakdown and was detained by police under the Mental Health Act, after "months of odd behaviour".
Speaking at his home, the Manor House at Great Durnford, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, Lord Tryon said that Lady Tryon had "flipped".

The couple, both close friends of the Prince of Wales, have been married for more than 24 years and have four children aged between 17 and 23.
The Australian-born Lady Tryon, nicknamed 'Kanga' by the Prince, claimed on Tuesday that her husband had returned on Saturday from a fishing trip to Russia and told her he wanted to divorce.
Two hours later she was detained by police after a struggle in the driveway of her home and taken to Salisbury police station for assessment by psychiatrists.
From there she went voluntarily to the spinal injuries unit at Salisbury District Hospital, where she has spent much of the past year after falling from a third-floor window at an addiction clinic.
A hospital spokesman said that Lady Tryon, 49, who has been in a wheelchair since the fall, was in "a satisfactory condition".
It is understood that her treatment there will include talking with psychiatrists about coping with spinal injury.
Lord Tryon, 57, spoke to a local news agency of his intention to seek a divorce. He said he had not been at the Manor House when police were called on Tuesday afternoon. "I was away in London," he said. "I do not know where she is now. The whole thing is a complete tragedy. She has had a breakdown or something like that. The divorce decision has been caused by months of odd behaviour."
He said he had no idea what had caused Lady Tryon's sudden breakdown. "She has flipped before," he said. "I do not understand the workings of the human mind. She has said in the past I am going to murder her."
He added that he thought a divorce would be "very likely for the sake of the children as much as anything". Lady Tryon, who suffered spina bifida as a child and was diagnosed as having cancer in 1993, has been prone to increasingly erratic behaviour. After 10 months in full-time hospital care, she began returning home at weekends. "She tended to overdo it," said a local resident. "She would have thousands of people round for lunch and she would not rest. She was just not well enough to come home and resume a normal life."
Several times she had called local police making (allegedly) false allegations about the household staff and theft of her jewellery.
Villagers at Great Durnford described the events as a tragedy.
"Lord Tryon is a very nice, decent person.
It is unfair that he has been made to appear the cause of her anguish," one woman said.

"Lady Tryon, one of the Prince of Wales's closest friends, was divorced yesterday on the grounds of her unreasonable behaviour.
Her husband, Lord Tryon, was granted a decree nisi in the High Court at a five-minute undefended hearing. Lord Tryon, 57, of Great Durnford, Wilts, said in his divorce petition that his former wife's behaviour had caused him "stress-related illness" and that she was still acting unreasonably.
Lady Tryon, 49, who was born in Australia, was nicknamed Kanga by the Prince of Wales. The couple, who married in April 1973, have four children Zoe, 23, Charles, 21, and twins Edward and Victoria, 17, who will stay with their father.
Lady Tryon has recently been recovering from a mental breakdown after being treated for a year for a fall which left her disabled and wheelchair-bound.
In June she was detained by the police under the Mental Health Act and taken to a police station as a designated "place of safety" under the act.
A month later, Lord Tryon won a court order banning his wife from the family estate but she was later allowed back in under an out-of-court settlement.
Lady Tryon had claimed that her husband was hostile to her friends and had barred them from their home.
She said he had falsely accused her of being mad and an alcoholic.

LADY TRYON, for many years one of the closest female friends of the Prince of Wales, has died at the age of 49 after years of struggling against physical disability and psychological illness.
Dale "Kanga" Tryon - she was given the nickname by Prince of Wales after he first met her in Australia - was born with spina bifida and later overcame cancer of the uterus, only to be defeated by a depressive illness.
Last year Lady Tryon underwent treatment at
Farm Place, an alcohol and drugs rehabilitation clinic in Surrey,
but her condition deteriorated.
She fell from a first-floor window at the clinic, suffering a broken back and fractured skull.

Lady Tryon died yesterday at the London Clinic from septicaemia after being admitted last week.
She was going through a divorce from her husband Lord Tryon, 57, and was also out of the Prince's circle, where for many years she was - in his own words “the only woman who really understands me”.

Lady Tryon also feared that she had been replaced as the Prince's closest confidante by Camilla ParkerBowles, and at that time she was overcome by inner turmoil and depression. While some of her friends attributed her mental breakdown to a sense of rejection, others pointed to the years she took heavy medication to overcome pain.

Lord Tryon said last night that his former wife met her death from "uncontrollable septicaemia". He said: "All her four children and her brother, Derek Harper, were able to be with her during the last few days."

A HIGH Court action has begun to prevent the execution of the will of Lady "Kanga" Tryon. Lady Tryon died at the London Clinic in November.
One of her friends said yesterday that a caveat had been placed on her will which could delay its enactment for six months.
In the intervening period further legal steps will be taken which are expected to lead to a court hearing.
The final months of her life were a troubled period for Lady Tryon, a former close friend of the Prince of Wales. In June last year she was arrested and detained under the Mental Health Act after a series of incidents near her home at Great Durnford, near Salisbury, Wilts.
She was banned from the family home, the Old Manor House, for a time and in September was divorced by Lord Tryon, 57, who accused her of "months of odd behaviour".
They had been married for 24 years.
Lady Tryon, who had been confined to a wheelchair after
falling from the third floor window of an addiction clinic,
travelled to India to seek treatment for recurring illness.
During that time she contacted 'Access to Justice', a voluntary organisation which works on behalf of people who have been "sectioned" to mental hospitals.
Alastair Mackillop of the organisation confirmed that he had obtained the caveat on Lady Tryon's will.
He said a detailed affidavit would be placed with the Probate Registry at the High Court.
"I am acting as someone who tried to assist Lady Tryon during the last months of her life," he said.

Estate manager 'told to shoot eagle'
"A SPORTING estate manager who claims he was ordered by the former husband of Lady Dale "Kanga" Tryon to shoot a golden eagle when the peer bought over the estate, has launched a battle for compensation.

Ian Thomas, who worked as estate manager for Fordie Estate, near Comrie, in Perthshire, said he was branded a troublemaker after threatening to report Lord Tryon to the Wildlife Commission, the Forestry Commission and the police.

Mr Thomas, who had worked on the 6,000-acre estate for 16 years, told an employment tribunal yesterday that his career was left in ruins after he threatened to blow the whistle on Lord Tryon’s plans.
He said he believed the peer had instructed him to shoot the golden eagle.
He said he was told by the peer, who had been married to Prince Charles’s close friend, Kanga, for 24 years before they divorced, that the protected birds had "no place" on the estate.
And he claimed he was constructively dismissed after he made it clear that he would not go along with the peer’s plans for the exclusive hunting estate.
Mr Thomas said the peer, who had the shooting lease for the estate but had not taken full ownership of it yet, had also talked about using poison on the estate in a way that gave him cause for concern.
Mr Thomas made his complaint official when in June 2000 he wrote to Harp Farm Ltd saying that he felt "morally obliged" to speak to the Forestry Commission, the Wildlife Commission and the police.
Lord Tryon, who late wife was nicknamed Kanga by Prince Charles and who died of blood poisoning in 1997, is defending the case.
The hearing continues.

Shooting row laird agrees to settlement, WILLIAM LYONS

LORD Tryon, the former husband of Lady "Kanga" Tryon and a close friend of the Prince of Wales, has avoided giving evidence at an employment tribunal after agreeing an "undisclosed sum" with his former gamekeeper who had claimed he was ordered to break the law and shoot a golden eagle.

Ian Thomas, 42, a father of five who had worked on the 6,000-acre Perthshire estate for 15 years, had claimed he was victimised and constructively dismissed after he ignored repeated hints from Lord Tryon to kill protected birds of prey.

It was alleged that during an inspection of the grouse moor the third Lord Tryon became irritated at finding piles of grouse feathers indicating kills by birds of prey and told Mr Thomas: "Eagles have no place on my grouse moor," and "I have bought an estate and I will do what I like."

Mr Thomas said he was shocked by the comments and felt "morally obliged" to report Lord Tryon, a former merchant banker and pageboy to the Queen, to the Wildlife Commission and the police.

Mr Thomas initially brought a claim of constructive dismissal against Lord Tryon "and others" to the tribunal, saying that he resigned as manager of Fordie Estate because of a breach of contract.

But later he amended his application to include so-called "whistle-blower" legislation, which would allow him to seek more substantial compensation if successful.

Lord Tryon bought Fordie estate after selling his 2,000-acre Wiltshire estate, Great Durnford, for £10 million.

Yesterday, Lord Tryon had been scheduled to give evidence at a tribunal in Dundee. But he avoided taking the stand after the two parties finally reached a "settlement in principle" for an undisclosed sum.

Mr Thomas said: "I am very proud of what we have done. We have settled for a very small amount of money, but it was never about the money. I was standing up for what I believe in and that is far more important. It has been a very tumultuous time for me and my family, and it is a relief that it is all over."

Lord Tryon was left out of the £1,277,738 will of his estranged late wife Kanga, whose real name was Dale, who died seven years ago aged 49.

The Australian-born former model was a close friend of Prince Charles in the mid- Seventies.

She overcame spina bifida before moving to London and marrying Lord Tryon. They later had four children and she set up a fashion company.

Prince Charles, who nicknamed her "Kanga" because of her bouncy personality, once described her as "the only woman who really understood me".

She made the prince a godfather to her elder son, Charles, now 28, who was also a page of honour to the Queen. Lady Tryon died in 1997 from septicaemia.

Earlier in the week, Mr Thomas accused Lord Tryon of lying to him in a letter.

During cross-examination, advocate David Stephenson referred to a letter Mr Thomas had been sent by Lord Tryon when he took over the estate, stating that no decision had been reached about the manager’s future role during a meeting between the pair.

He suggested that Lord Tryon was disputing the claim by Mr Thomas that a verbal agreement had been reached about his continued employment.

Mr Thomas replied: "It is not the case. It is a complete falsehood. To deny that we had a verbal agreement on that day is, I’m afraid, a lie.

"There is no other word for it. It’s a lie. He stated that we would be kept on. He said it to me, he said it to my daughter, and he said it to my wife. If I misunderstood him, so did everyone else."

While still manager of the estate at Fordie near Comrie, where Prince Charles once was a visitor, Mr Thomas wrote to his new employer, Lord Tryon, stressing that he would not break the law.

The relationship between the two men subsequently deteriorated and Lord Tryon referred the letter to his solicitors.

Mr Stephenson earlier referred to comments in a letter from Mr Thomas setting out his understanding of Lord Tryon’s views on raptors. A passage read: "A charitable view of your comments is that you are simply unaware of the law." The letter also suggested that Lord Tryon should meet a Tayside Police wildlife liaison officer.

In the letter, Mr Thomas also alluded to Scotland being a "different place" to England and that Perthshire locals may object to the estate being turned into a "a rich man’s playground".

Last week it was reported that Lord Tryon had offered Mr Thomas £45,000 if he dropped the complaint.

Mr Thomas said he refused the money, as well as further inducements offered by Lord Tryon, and claims he had no choice but to quit his post.

He told the tribunal: "He [Lord Tryon] offered me inducements for me to behave a certain way. He said he’ll pay me a sum of money. In addition, he’ll give me a generous amount of time before leaving the house and a good reference.

"If you get on to the slippery slope of acquiescing to things, then you get into situations of criminality yourself."

Mr Thomas joined Fordie Estate as estate manager at the beginning of 1985, a position he held until he resigned on 3 July, 2000, shortly after Lord Tryon’s arrival.

Dreda, LadyTryon, who died at her home, 20 April, 2002, aged 92, was
the widow of the courtier, the 2nd LordTryon, GCVO, KCB, DSO, PC,
and
mother-in-law of the Prince of Wales's late friend, Lady(Kanga)Tryon.

She was born as Etheldreda Josephine Burrell, but always known as
Dreda, on 20 June, 1909, the only child of Sir Merrik Raymond Burrell,
7th Baronet, CBE, (1877-1957), by his second wife, the former Coralie
Adelaide Mervyn Porter Porter, scion of an Irish landed family.

She had an elder half-sister (from her father's first marriage), Joan
Louise, who married Lord North, heir to the 8th Earl of Guildford; &
two elder half-brothers, Walter, 8th Baronet, and Peter.

In August, 1939, she married Charles George Vivian Tryonn, whose
father, George Clement Tryon was raised to the peerage, 18 April,
1940, as Baron Tryonn, and died seven months later, 24 November, 1940.

Dreda's husband succeeded as 2nd Baron. He had served as ADC to the
Governor-General of Canada, the Earl of Bessborough, in the 1930s, and
was Adjutant, Grenadier Guards, 1934-7; ADC to Gen. Sir Bertram
Brooke, who commanded the London District, 1937-39.

LordTryon joined the Royal Household in 1949, as Assistant Keeper of
the Privy Purse to King George VI. He had three years to learn the job
under his predecessor, Sir Ulick Alexander. This game him invaluable
experience in this extremely responsible office.

LordTryon was appointed Keeper of the Privy Purse & Treasurer to
Queen Elizabeth II in October, 1952, and actually carried the Privy
Purse in the Coronation procession, and it became Tryonn's property
after the ceremony. He was repsonsible for the management of the Royal
finances for almost two decades.

When the Court was in London LordTryon saw the young Queen four or
five times every week. In London, Lord & LadyTryon had a small flat
in St James's Palace, and a country home at Great Durnford, near
Salisbury.

Dreda's husband served as Keeper of the Privy Purse until 1971, and
was thereafter a Lord-in-Waiting to HM until his death in 1976.

The young Prince of Wales became a great friend of LadyTryon's only
son, Anthony, later 3rd Baron, who married in 1973, Dale Harper, from
Melbourne, Australia, known to the Prince as *Kanga*.

The Prince of Wales stood sponsor at the christening of Dreda's
grandson, Charles Tryon, in 1976, and the boy later served QE11 as a
Page of Honour.

LadyTryon is survived by her son, and by a daughter, Patricia (Mrs. Ranald Macdonald of Melbourne).

The funeral service takes place at St Andrews Church, Great Durnfford,
Wiltshire, on Friday 26 April, 2002, at 11.30 a.m.
